Pre-germinated Grass Seed

A greenkeeper/groundsman is considered fortunate if more than one quarter of the seed he applies in the open actually germinates. Since bents and fescues germinate some 7-10 days later than perennials the resulting sward will rarely contain an even percentage of the species sown.

There is, of course, nothing new about pre-germinated seed. The early Roman settlers germinated seed and many of our own craftsmen are in the habit of sowing small quantities of seed in trays of moist, loose soil for the rapid re-generation of damaged areas on greens and wickets.

What is new is the ready availability of top quality seed in commercially available and affordable quantities, and in blends of evenly germinated seed for specific sports turf areas.
