Extensive Green Roof Substrates

Green Roof Substrates are specifically engineered for different types of roof greening, both for domestic and commercial projects.

Extensive Green Roof Substrates are for use on shallow green roof systems (<200mm depth) and are often associated with Sedum mat, Sedum plug plant or wildflower planting. These growing media must be low in nutrient content so the roof is low maintenance and to ensure it does not get out-competed by undesirable vegetation. They must also have good water holding capacity due to the reduced “soil” depth whilst remaining free draining, so the substrates do not become completely saturated with water, which could cause root-rot.

Our exciting new range of extensive substrates includes:

Sedum Mix – specifically designed for Sedum mat or plug plant systems. Often these roofs have very shallow root-zones so this blend has been engineered to be lightweight and have excellent water holding capacity and good nutrient availability.
Wildflower Mix – designed for both wildflower mats and wildflower seeded roofs, this blend is formulated to be placed at slightly deeper depths, have good water holding capacity, but fairly low nutrient content to prevent unwanted vegetation from out-competing the wild flowers.
Brownroof Mix – engineered to contain larger aggregate particle sizes (to imitate natural “wasteland” sites) and contain very little organic material, which should promote increased plant diversity.
Acid Grassland Mix – formulated to provide a lower pH value than our other extensive blends and slightly richer in organic content to mimic that of natural acidic grassland.

We are also specialists in Intensive Green Roof Substrates, suitable for “roof gardens” and engineered for larger vegetation, such as shrubs and trees.
